Reinstalling Windows Millennium Edition.

(Note - for instructions for a 'clean' install of ME, look here - http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/clean.htm )

You should maintain your current settings.

First: If possible, backup all your important data as a precaution.

Second: Update your virus program and do a scan.

Third: Download a copy of Ad-Aware from Lavasoft http://www.lavasoftusa.com (remove all items found) and SpyBot http://www.safer-networking.org/ scan and remove all unwanted parasites (note - be careful with this, it's a powerful tool!).

I don't recommend reinstalling Win ME in normal mode.

You first need to remove "Windows Media Player 9" (WMP9), if installed. Use "System Restore" to remove it; or if that's not possible, then delete the file "C:\Windows\System\wmploc.dll". This prevents the "VERX" error, which will cause the re-install to fail.

Disable any BIOS virus program before you start (read your manual to check, if you're not sure about this)
If you have Tweak UI installed, be sure to uncheck "Log on automatically......" on the Logon tab (if you use it).
Disable any and all Norton Products (preferably uninstall NAV - it will almost certainly require re-installation afterwards, anyhow)

Next if you have IE6 installed, you need to remove it.
Download "IE6REMOV.ZIP" and read the Readme file for instructions on how to use it.

Next, In Windows, do a search for BASE2.CAB.
-----------------------
BASE2.CAB is usually found in one of two locations on your hard drive.
"C:\Windows\Options\CABS"
"C:\Windows\Options\Install"
-----------------------
If you find it,
then boot into Safe Mode
Go to the Folder where you found BASE2.CAB
and double-click on SETUP.EXE,
or do it from DOS.

Boot using your "Windows Startup Disk".
Select Minimal (Option 4)
At the DOS prompt
Type the following lines
and press <enter> after each.

C:
CD <Path>
SETUP

<Path> = the path where you found the BASE2.CAB.
such as C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL

Use the following method below only if you have to. It may cause you to download more Windows Updates than the methods above.  Or if you have a Restore disk only, then you may lose everything.

If you have the WinME CD,
then you can reinstall Windows in DOS
by going to your CDROM,
and running SETUP.
Boot using your "Windows Startup Disk",
Select option 1 (Help)

After the reinstall, go to the "Windows Update Setup Files" folder (If you have one) and run its IE setup program.
And then go online to "Windows Update" site, and get all the other updates you need.
